Mamut Prize at The Pastel Society Exhibition 2024

Another year and yet another Pastel Society Exhibition in the UK for all the lovers of soft Pastel and drawing techniques!

This was a special date. The Society was celebrating their 125th anniversary. Unfortunately I couldn’t attend personally this artistic event but I got all the information and material to share on my blog., This year's Pastel Society Exhibition motive was “Remarkable”. And looking at the selected works, it was indeed Rearkable! “This milestone exhibition presents a positive challenge to those with pre-conceived ideas about pastels. Expect a vibrant, adventurous and creative show, which will open hearts and minds to this special medium.”

“To mark the occasion, two new prizes will be presented: The Tom Coates Memorial Prize, worth £2,000, and The President's Prize for a young artist.

Exhibitors include established and recently elected member artists, alongside accomplished non-members selected from an international open call. As well as the many pastel paintings on display, there is a myriad of works using other dry media: charcoal, conte, graphite, and coloured pencils.”

I wish I could have visited this exhibition. I have received several mails from friends and painters I met the past year, sharing with me their excitement and their impressions in the form of videos and pictures. I did have the opportunity to take a look at the works selected this year in detail, though, one by one, through the Mall Galleries website, while choosing the Mamut Award of this year. It was not easy at all! It looks like each year the level improves and they raise the bar!

The jury has made an excellent job by choosing a large and diverse selection of paintings from each artist. And, of course, the painters have also made their part creating colorful, strong, and in some cases, big pieces for the occasion that do not leave the viewer indifferent. People often think that making art is a simple task, and maybe, for some, it is. Anyone can draw. Anyone can wield a pen, a brush or a pastel and paint. But creating a work of art that surpasses boundaries, that manages to impact the viewer in some way is not an easy task. This is especially true considering nowadays we all find ourselves influenced by thousands, if not millions of image every day. Developing skills takes a lot of work, repetition, time, and patience. Even with all that, there is not a recipe for success. The Pastel Society Annual Exhibition is a celebration of art and artists. A joy for the eyes and a time to celebrate art and Pastel medium.
